PR Racing

Timing and Organizing races for three decades

Lake Lenape Triathlon Information

Our COVID Era plan for your safety

We began organizing races over 30 years ago.  This has been a part-time hobby business as so many involved in this organization are passionate volunteers and athletes alike and all have full-time jobs elsewhere and have perpetuated this business for one reason: “For the love of the sport”.  We have consistently brought the same high level of organization to every one of our events.

PR Racing has been working with local municipal, county and health officials to bring you events protecting the racers with a social distancing strategy unknown to racing community.  We know that this is not ideal and part of the allure of racing is to enjoy the experience with other like-minded people at the same time, but we can’t, in good conscience, permit an event in traditional style and fanfare.  So, if you enjoy racing, we will be holding the LAKE LENAPE TRIATHLON as a time trial event.  This plan includes assigned start times, limiting race participants to 249 athletes, no post registration, no award ceremony…  Changes to the venue and the race are indicted in RED.

Many layers of Municipal, County and State Government  approved this event for 2021.  The 2021 race season is going to be unique experience to all of us so bear with us and all of your athletic brethren because things will be different.

By changing the format of this race to a time trial event, it will automatically increase (double) the time and associated expense of police/EMS, timing et als.  We have already outlaid permit fees, registration fees, security deposits and the like for the Lake Lenape Triathlon.  Because this is a unique race year and Lake Lenape Triathlon will be a time trial event meaning athletes will be asked to report to the registration area and starting line at specific intervals.  There will be limited Race Day Registration availability.

COVID Plan for Lake Lenape Triathlon 2021

We realize that holding activities during the current pandemic presents significant challenges in hosting activities this summer and beyond.  PR Racing LLC is proposing limiting typical physical interaction and proximity of the athletes at this year’s race.  Therefore, we will be running this event as a Time Trial Event.  You will be assigned a start time within a two hour window.  We are hoping to start athletes one-by-one.  This will spread athletes out over a large window thereby minimizing contact with each other.

••If the Athlete is exhibiting a fever or cold-like symptoms, we are requesting that the athlete stay home in the confirmation letter/email that usually is a function of the registration process.  That Athlete will be issued a full refund.

••All athletes will park remotely in an area adjacent to the Lake Lenape WEST.  Athletes will be instructed to park their vehicles in opposing directions creating six feet distancing between vehicles (see attachment).  There will be volunteers in the parking area to aid in maintaining this distancing strategy.

••After parking, all athletes will report to the registration area to pick up their pre-packaged race packet.  The ground will be marked with spray chalk at 6 feet intervals as they stand in small lines to check in and pick up their race packets.

••All athletes will have their ‘no-contact’ temperature check on their forehead, prior to being admitted to the registration area.  If an athlete has an elevated temperature, he or she will be sent home and a full refund will be issued.

••We will be following CDC guidelines by limiting the number of athletes in mass gathering events to under 250, or whatever the CDC recommends at the time of the race.   We will also be staggering start times, so there will never be more than 10-20 athletes gathered at the same place (& separated at least by 6 feet), similar to what golf courses are doing.

••This triathlon will be modified as a time trial event.  Meaning, athletes will report at an assigned time and begin racing the course, one-by-one.  There will be no groups or packs of athletes racing.  Once the athlete starts the race, he/she will be doing this event by themselves.

••Athletes will be encouraged to wash their hands with Hand Sanitizing Stations at the registration area, transition area and at the finish line area before and after the event.

••Athletes will be asked not to bring any spectators, friends and/or family, or support team with them to the race.

••Each Athlete will be asked to bring and wear a mask/face covering for the day and Volunteers will be wearing latex/nitrile gloves throughout the day as well as masks.  Athletes will also be encouraged to wear a mask while racing.

••We are expanding our transition area and spreading out.  We will also be limiting the number of bikes per rack to 7 athletes per rack.

••We are eliminating the post-race award ceremony, as well as any snacks food, recovery sustenance in a common/communal area to reduce any athlete cluster.

This policy exceeds the current CDS standard and will continue to be modified according to the current status of this crisis, at the time and location the class is held via “Interim Guidance for Mass Gatherings” on the CDC’s website.

New Race Date:  July 17th, 2021, 8am Start

This grass roots triathlon started in 1990.  We began with approximately 80 athletes and have hosted over 400 athletes some years.  This triathlon was designed for the beginner or novice in mind.  However, many professionals have done the race, as have TV personalities including Cecily Tynan of Action News.  MTV producers of their show ‘Made’ also filmed an episode here at Lake Lenape Triathlon.  The race has been consistently delivering a professional product with its management, as well as its constantly improving all organizational aspects of the race.  We go the extra effort to close the roads to vehicular traffic to promote a safe race and make the race a better environment to race in.  This year’s event will be a time trial event, as to minimize the size of the crowd, as well as the interaction amongst athletes.

REGISTRATION:

THERE WILL BE NO POST REGISTRATION.  ONCE REGISTRATION CLOSES ON JULY 1st, NO ADDITIONAL REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.  IF YOU WANT TO RACE, SIGN UP BY JULY 1st ASSUMING WE HAVE SPACE AVAILABLE.

Safety:

During the race, no spectators (there should not be any spectators at this race) are allowed in the transition area.  Athletes only.  Helmets are a must and please DO NOT Draft on the bike leg.  Headphones and Earbuds are NOT permitted during the race for safety reasons.  Any of the aforementioned violations will result in an automatic DISQUALIFICATION.

Swim (LONG SPRINT Course = Half Mile; SUPER SPRINT Course = Quarter Mile.  The sprint course is a .25 mile course and will be a looped swim (breathing from the left side), keeping all of the buoys on your left. We sink approximately 10 GREEN swim buoy markers for the SPRINT race to make it easier to sight the next buoy for the competitors.  Both race swims will begin at the same time and be formatted in the same way in a time trial style start (1-by-1).  That LONG course will be marked with differently colored ORANGE bouys and will obviously be longer.  Both swims are  loops   Both swims will also end in transition area at Lake Lenape Park, WEST.  See the map of the swim portion of this event.  As swimmer enter the water, LONG course swimmers will line up closer to Old Harding Highway.  SUPER SPRINT athletes will line up closer to the Boat house.  Course subject to change, so pay attention to last minute instructions.

There will be lifeguards, rescue boats, surf boards, and the police department’s dive team on hand to assist any swimmers having difficulty. We have even had a car/boat in the water during the race overseeing the swim.  Wetsuits are permitted regardless of the water temperature. Temperature of the water is sometimes above 78 degrees F, so be mindful of dehydration and being more uncomfortable if you wear a wetsuit above 78 degrees.

Lka lenape   SWIM Start

This year, we will again be emphasizing safety by sending swimmers off one-by-one from a beach standing start, at 3 second intervals (this takes the same amount of time as sending athletes off in waves).  In 2017, we are the first in the area to implement this style of start.  We are asking that the swimmer seed themselves according to their ability and self predicted swim time (faster first).  This should spread the swimmers out, eliminate bunching at the start and around each buoy, and reduce the number of athletes swimmer over top of one another, thereby creating a safer swim.

The Race Director can (and will) provide personalized instruction for those that require specialized attention.  The below photo depicts competitor Joe Boothby receiving pre-race instructions the evening before the race, as he ‘readys’ his mind and body to tackle the next days challenge.

First Run of the LONG Sprint and SUPER SPRINT Duathlon:

If you are not swimming, the first leg of the race is a 1.5 mile looped run within the park (Lake Lenape WEST).   Both SUPER Sprint and LONG Distance Duathletes will cover the same distance for the first run.  The run is on both paved and dirt/sand roads.

Run Courses

The Transition Area:  No riding in the transition area.  The flow will be in one direction.  Swim in, Bike in, Bike out, and run out will all begin from the water side and move towards the access road.  Also, no spectators, support crews, husbands, wives, children, dogs, cats, fish or any other living or artificial beings are allowed in the transition area once the race begins.  Athletes only (thank you).

SUPER Sprint Bike (second leg) [Triathlon and Duathlon]
The 9.0 mile bike will be an out and back course. We close the bike course to vehicular traffic, so racers can enjoy a traffic free event.  Riders will exit the transition area and head out of the park.  Make a RIGHT onto Weymouth Road and b YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING THE RACE COURSE. Weymouth Rd. will be closed to vehicular through traffic. However, keep in mind that residents on the road may also be on the roadway. So, heads up and pay attention to all rules of the road. A bicycle is considered a motor vehicle and you must abide by all motor vehicle laws, therefor all participant may adhere to the “rules of the road”. There will be draft marshals on both bike, foot and motorcycle. Officials have been instructed to issue no warning for drafting.  NO DRAFTING WILL BE PERMITTED.
